Premios Colibri – Website
A film awards, given a home online
THE CLIENT
Premios Colibrí is the most important award of Ecuadorian cinema and audiovisual work — organized by COPAE Ecuador (the Corporation of Audiovisual Producers of Ecuador) together with the Academy of Cinematographic and Audiovisual Arts of Ecuador. Held every few years in Quito, it honours the best of the country’s film and audiovisual production across nineteen jury categories, from Best Fiction Feature to Best Original Score.
THE CHALLENGE
After the organization rebranded, Premios Colibrí needed a website that felt like the award itself: not a cold, institutional listing, but a warmer, more humanistic celebration of a national creative community.
The brief carried a second, less visible half — an internal intranet for the academy’s own workflow: member polling and judge selection, the machinery that decides who is nominated and who wins.
WEBSITE DESIGN
WHAT WE DELIVERED
A custom-built website in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript — designed from the ground up rather than dropped into a template — paired with a private intranet for the academy's internal poll and judge-selection process.
The public site is a multi-state platform that moves through the award's full season: Convocatoria (call for entries), Elegibles (eligible works), Nominadas (nominees), and Ganadores (winners) — each phase changing what the public sees as the cycle advances. Around that spine sit a multi-edition archive reaching back to the first edition in 2010, institutional pages for the organization and its people, a press room, and a media-forward gallery that gives nominated films the screen presence they deserve.
OUR APPROACH
We pitched a proposal, were selected, and set out to design a warmer, more humanistic award site — one that reads less like a government registry and more like an invitation into Ecuadorian cinema. The visual language leans on the colibrí (hummingbird) that gives the award its name: a small bird whose survival is a matter of adaptability, strategy, and will — qualities the organization sees mirrored in the country's film-makers.
From there we extended the build inward, developing the members' intranet so the academy could run its polling and judge selection on infrastructure we designed and understood — closing the loop between the public face of the award and the private process behind it.
THE RESULT
An ongoing relationship since the 2020 edition. What began as a website has scaled into a living platform of more than 100 pages, maintained and grown edition after edition — the studio that built it has stayed responsible for it as the award has grown.
